The park featured at the beginning and end of the film is Vancouver’s famous Victory Square. Featuring gorgeous granite structures and memorials, this historical gathering space is framed by stunning late Victorian/Edwardian era heritage structures. Victory Square occupies a small triangle of land, lined with 1892 specimen maples (Sugar, Big Leaf and Norway) along the perimeter. Nearby, you can find Vancouver’s Centre of International Contemporary Art, a must see destination for art lovers which features special exhibitions from international artists as well as panels, workshops and special events. Once you are finished exploring, head over to Pourhouse, a trendy bar that serves craft beer, unique cocktails, and upscale pub food in a converted century-old warehouse with a 38-ft bar that was handcrafted from reclaimed planks of Douglas Fir.
The scene where The Mother and William interrogate one of Hector’s henchman was filmed in the pool house of the Rio Vista. A Vancouver Heritage Site, Rio Vista is a lavish mansion designed by architect Bernard Palmer in 1930 for Henry Frederick “Harry” Reifel. Built in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, the property has an immense conservatory and a two-storey pool house, separate garage, and tennis court. While Rio Vista is a private property and closed to visitors, the gorgeous and nature-rich Southlands neighbourhood of Vancouver has plenty to enjoy. Take a stroll alongside the waterfront at Fraser River Park, play a round of golf at the Marine Drive Golf Club or enjoy a gourmet dining experience at Land & Sea, a restaurant that specializes in fusing Japanese and West Coast Canadian flavours.
The scene where The Mother watches over Zoe from a balcony was filmed at The Dominion Building, a famous landmark that has been part of the Vancouver skyline for over 100 years. Considered one of the city’s most popular heritage buildings, the Dominion Building is a thirteen-storey Beaux-Arts style commercial structure on West Hastings Street, across the street from Victory Square. Built in 1910, the Dominion was Vancouver’s very first skyscraper, and it even held the record for tallest commercial building in the British Empire for a very brief period of time. The building also has an eclectic mix of businesses such as jewelry stores like Cavalier, massage therapy clinic Mountain View Movement Massage and Wellness and the Lebanese eatery Nuba in Gastown. Sightseers should also check out the nearby Vancouver Lookout, an observation deck with impressive 360° views of the city including Stanley Park, Gastown, the Northshore mountains and Vancouver’s downtown core.
